Five Tips for Flattering Photos

The other day, my husband had corporate headshots taken at his office (not by me). He came home teasing me about all the photographer lingo he heard that apparently he hears me say ALL THE TIME. I must be a broken record....

Well, at the risk of being totally redundant and one note, I’ve decided to list my most common posing utterances so you can be fully prepared for your session and rock it (full disclosure: practicing in the mirror is how I learned, and how you can learn too!!)

Note: I love to make you look natural, relaxed, and “lifestyle” but often that requires a little posing guidance behind the scenes. During your session with Fawn Lily Photography, I promise to guide you through poses and to make sure you look your very best!

Okay, here we go! Tip #1 for how to pose in photos:

1. Chin forward and down

This, here, people is tip number 1 not just haphazardly. It is tip number 1, because it IS tip number 1. Get ready to hear me say this a million times during your Victoria BC photo session.

Once upon a time, we had family photos taken by a professional photographer (in another city). She was the sweetest lady but I felt a bit out of sorts because I was left to my own posing discretion and, hello, I couldn’t actually see myself. When we received our images, I wanted to love them so much, but honestly couldn’t get past my own body insecurities and the glaring double chin situation that showed up in a few photos was enough for me to lock those pictures away and to vow NEVER to deliver anyone a double chin picture. Now maybe I should just hit the gym a little more frequently as I hear that can help with excess chins, and maybe you should too, but there are things you can do to minimize the double c that don’t involve blood, sweat, or tears.

If you stick your chin out (ie forward) by channeling your inner turtle, and then drop your chin down, it’s like magic, double chin disappears. Voila! Let’s all practice: Chins Forward and Down! It feels ridiculous, but it works!

Now double chins can make a pesky re-occurrence when you try and look at someone who is just too close to your own face. When you pull your face back in order to focus, a massive double chin is generally the result. So, when I prompt you to look at each other, or to look at baby, don’t move your face away and instead just don’t focus your eyes. You don’t need to see clearly for me to get the most beautiful intimate photograph.

2. One hip forward

A basic tenant of women’s portraiture is that women are meant to look curvy like an “s.” I promise not to contort you or require Olympic gymnast flexibility during your photo session with Victoria-based Fawn Lily Photography. But, think "S" curve and everything will get a little bit better, promise. The "S" shape I'm talking about it is easily achieved by positioning on hip towards the photographer and popping your hip. You should keep your weight on your back foot and bend your front knee (more on that below). Give the camera a little sass also helps with getting your body into the right shape (I'm serious!).

3. If it bends, bend it

This is about as straight forward as possible, and is handy to remember to boot. If a body part bends, then bend it. Arms should be crooked, hips should be popped, knees should be bent (ok, ok, just one knee- the front one!). Try it, try it!

4. Arms away from the body

You guys, upper arms are the worst, right? If you are weary of your upper arm - fret not, you are in the majority. When we, as women, try to look skinny, and hide our arms, we might naturally squeeze them in. The result is that we look rigid, uncomfortable, and our arms look twice as big as normal. Try this one right now. Stand sideways in front of a mirror. Press your arm against your side; now lift your arm away from your side by like an inch or so. Notice how your arm looks twice as big when it is pressed against your body? Yes? Great, let's not do that, k? The solution is as easy as just being aware and pulling your arm away from your body ever just a little bit. (If you are a man, don't do this. Apparently, men's upper arms are supposed to look big!)

And finally, FLP's Tip #5 for Flattering Posing:

5. Lean ever so slightly forward

This one is my favourite tip because it is so easy and makes such a huge difference in how you look in portraits. Our natural reaction to a camera is to lean back a bit away from the camera. Sometimes this lean is accompanied by a knee-jerk desire to run away and not be photographed at all. Instead of the backwards lean, just bend a little bit forward at your waist, and I promise, it's instant posing success. The forward lean creates a much more flattering and slimming angle than when we lean back. It helps to bring our faces into the forefront of the image and results in our bodies (generally heavier than our heads) looking a little further away - ergo smaller. It's really easy too, promise.
